Choosing the Right Keyboard or Piano
A keyboard instrument is the foundation of music theory — every chord, interval, and scale is laid out visually on the keys. Whether you choose a digital piano for home practice or a portable keyboard for lessons, the goal at the start is weighted, full-size keys and accurate touch response.
Weighted vs. unweighted keys
Weighted keys simulate acoustic piano action and build the finger strength and technique needed to play a real piano. Fully-weighted 88-key digital pianos are the best learning tools. Semi-weighted or unweighted keyboards are fine for general use and synthesis but don't develop proper piano technique.
What to shop for
For serious piano study, a Yamaha P-45, Roland FP-30, or Casio PX-S1100 (all 88 weighted keys) is the right start. For general keyboard/casual use, a 61-key semi-weighted keyboard is more portable and less expensive. Avoid touch-insensitive mini keys for any student taking lessons — velocity sensitivity is non-negotiable.
Stand, pedal, and headphones
A keyboard stand and a sustain pedal are immediate necessities. A dedicated piano bench sets proper playing height and posture. Headphones let students practice without disturbing the household — look for closed-back models that block outside noise. A padded gig bag or hard case protects portable instruments on the way to lessons.
