Choosing the Right Clarinet
The clarinet has anchored the concert band since the 18th century, and it remains one of the most approachable first instruments — versatile across classical, jazz, and marching contexts. From the Bb soprano to the bass clarinet, understanding the family's range helps you choose with confidence.
History & sound
Invented around 1700 by instrument maker Johann Christoph Denner, the clarinet evolved from the chalumeau. Its distinctive cylindrical bore gives it a rich, covered lower register (the 'chalumeau') and a bright, projecting upper register (the 'clarion') — two contrasting voices in one instrument.
What to shop for
For beginners, look for an ABS resin or nickel-plated Bb clarinet in an approved student lineup (Yamaha YCL-255, Jupiter JCL700, or Buffet Prodige). Key and pad action should feel even. For advancing players, a wooden body (grenadilla) delivers better resonance — the Buffet E11 is a classic intermediate step-up.
Reeds & ongoing costs
Clarinets require replacement reeds — plan for a new box every few months. Rico or Vandoren in strength 2–2.5 is the standard beginner start. Cork grease for the joints, a cleaning swab, and annual pad checks are the recurring maintenance items.
