Choosing the Right Saxophone
Invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s, the saxophone bridges the woodwind and brass families — it uses a reed like a clarinet but is built from brass. The alto is the standard school-band entry point; the tenor follows for jazz players.
Alto vs. tenor: which to start with
Most band directors assign the alto saxophone for beginners — it's lighter, easier to transport, and its fingering transfers directly to tenor. Tenor saxophones are common in jazz ensembles and concert bands at the intermediate level. Soprano and baritone saxes are usually assigned to experienced players.
What to shop for
Look for an alto in an approved lineup: Yamaha YAS-280, Jupiter JAS710, or Selmer Prelude. A quality student model has consistent intonation, smooth key action, and durable lacquer. Avoid unbranded imports — low-tolerance keywork frustrates beginners and is expensive to repair.
Mouthpiece & reeds
Many student saxes ship with a basic mouthpiece that works fine for year one. A better mouthpiece (Vandoren 5RV or Yamaha 4C) can improve tone noticeably as a student advances. Rico or Vandoren reeds in strength 2–2.5 are the standard beginner setup.
