Acoustic vs. electric: where to start
Acoustic steel-string guitars are the most self-contained first choice — no amp needed, and the slightly higher string action builds hand strength. Classical nylon-string guitars are easier on fingertips and better for fingerpicking. Electric guitars play easier (lower action, lighter strings) but require an amp and cable, adding to the initial cost.
What to shop for
For beginners, a solid-top acoustic in the $150–$400 range from Yamaha, Fender, or Taylor Academy delivers noticeably better tone and playability than budget imports. Key quality indicators: straight neck (check by sighting down the fretboard), low and even action at the 12th fret, and tuning machines that hold pitch.
